Just as political beliefs seem to have become amplified and ever more incompatible, we have our own form of factionalism within racing.

Those provocative lists of jumpers to follow, announced well before the Arc or Champion Stakes have been run, draw audible groans from fans of the Flat, as much as any murmuring of 'roll on the Lincoln' will receive stern disapproval from those enjoying the middle of the National Hunt season.

It is fortunately still permitted to like both codes and those centrists among us will be envious of Paul Sandy, a figure who has deserved a good turn with his racing interests.
